Many blogs and news sources have given Google ChromeOS a beating for its simplistic nature and for being a single use device. But you have to wonder, why would Google create such a crippled OS? My initial thought was that this product is aimed at a very specific group of users, the non-computer tech people. While this may be true, it doesn’t explain why they are “Appifying” the web. Completely unnecessary, but considering apple’s claim to fame being the app store, I’m sure they assumed that this would draw more people. What does this mean? More after the break. It means that once again, companies can charge to access content through the internet. The apps are just html5 websites that are linked in the browser. Why is this a big deal? Well, through the chrome store, people can “buy” access to the site for a minimal fee. While I don’t know how popular or successful ChromeOS will be, selling access to websites is a genius idea to one of the oldest forms of media, the dying Newspapers. Newspapers are unsure how to make money on the web, and this might be the solution they are looking for. What do you think? Would you pay to buy access to a web optimized version of your newspaper? Would you even pay to access a newspaper with all with so many blogs to choose from? Sound off in the comments.
